Sonic Youth - Goo
ב- 26 ליוני 1990 שחררה "Sonic Youth" את אלבומה השישי "Goo".
האלבום כלל שינוי בצליל של הלהקה והתרחקות מסוימת מסגנון ה- No Wave שאפיין אותה.
זה אולי האלבום הכי נגיש של הלהקה, עם צליל נקי ומעובד יותר מזה שהיה ללהקה עד כה. האלבום שילב ז'אנרים כמו נויז, פופ, פסיכדליה ואפלו קצת ראפ, (Chuck D מלהקת "Public Enemy" מתארח בשיר "Kool Thing"). באלבום מתארחים גם אמנים נספים כגון J. Mascis מ"דינוזאור ג'וניור" ודון פלמינג.
בעקבות הצלחת האלבום "Daydream Nation" משנת 1988, יצאו "סוניק יות'" יצאו לסיבוב הופעות גדול בשיתוף נירוונה (שהיתה אז בראשית דרכה) וניל יאנג. סיבוב ההופעות הזה הביא ללהקה את חוזה ההקלטות המיוחל עם Geffen שיסייע לה לפרוץ החוצה להצלחה עולמית.
למרות הפיכת הצליל של הלהקה לנגיש יותר (בסיוע חברת התקליטים), הצליחה "סוניק יות'" לשמור על הזהות שלה. השפעות הפוסט-פאנק ולעיתים גם ה"אוונגרד", שמתכתב עם ה"וולווט אנדרגראונד" (אפילו בעטיפת האלבום), קיימים גם באלבום הזה, למרות ההפקה "הידידותית". הצליל המחוספס והבוסרי מהאלבומים הקודמים נשמע עדיין בשירים כמו "Cinderella’s Big Score" ו- "Mary-Chris". נגיעות הדארק המוכרות בולטות בשיר "Song For Karen", שיר על קארן קרפנטר מה"קרפנטרס" שמתה מאנורקסיה, והחדשנות והניסיוניות שהיוו את סימן ההיכר של הלהקה מצויים בין היתר בשיר "Scooter And Jinx".
אגב, מעניין לציין שמספר שנים לאחר מכן "סוניק יות'" ישלימו את המחווה לקארן קרפנטר עם גירסת כיסוי לשיר "Superstar" שנכלל בפסקול הסרט "Juno".
אין ספק שהאלבום הזה היווה נדבך חשוב ומהותי בחדירה של המוסיקה האלטרנטיבית לכיוון המיינסטרים, מהלך אשר יתפרץ במלוא עוצמתו שנה לאחר מכן.
